Why? Feeling frustrated. I know we all do. I need to clear all this bad energy from my art process. I have had so many people in my art career/lifetime who have promised me connections, galleries-the moon! I wonder why anyone would make unnecessary gratuitous promises. Still working under outrageously difficult circumstances. Worse than yours? Maybe. Share them with me in comments. I’m Still Standing!

Here’s the full thesis/premise. I was happily making more and more of these monoprints. It occurred to me that I could make both true and false statements in this series. Let the viewer decide.
And now for the eureka moment. The INTERNET! Pause. Soak that up.
Meant to be a tool that encompasses all knowledge. As did Pliny’s encyclopedia.
Doesn’t. Didn’t. Never will.
But it gives me universal range. I can make a print about anything that strikes my fancy. Which is what I’ve been doing.

Pliny was an historian in Ancient Rome, around the time of the Pompeii disaster. ( will discuss that later!).
His encyclopedia was created from fact, best guesses, rumor, unverified accounts and utter garbage. All taken at face value as the truth. Feel you are getting closer to my premise?
I decided that I would do the same, with a conscious twist.
More on that tomorrow. Will we find our heroine tied to the train tracks? Will she finally tell you the total concept? Yes, I promise!

Sometimes you get a gift/blessing that you don’t recognize at the time.  Or aren’t ready for.

Then, one brilliant day, ( for me last Saturday, and a new moon! ), the gift reveals itself.  And you end up giggling with the perfection and timing. (well, that’s what I did!).

My project- a large 4 panel (5′ x 7′) fabric/linocut/assemblage piece- “The Man Who Couldn’t Hear Orange”, has been languishing for a long time.  Blogged here that it was time to take control and finish this.  For feng shui reasons alone!  See earlier blog…

One of my tools is an older sewing machine–I don’t hand quilt-I use the machine to make quilt type marks to solidify the structure.  So excited to get started.  Then, the machine begins to cough up thread/snarl/jam.  Horrors!  My newer machine can’t make the marks I need!  No $$$ at this time to fix it.

Then!  The Amy Machine!  My friend decided to give me this over a year ago, because she felt I needed it.  It is an “all the bells and whistles” kind of tool.  I hadn’t had the energy to explore it.  Wasn’t sure it was what I should be using.

Saturday!  Took out the manual and after 1/2  hour got the thing bobbined and threaded.  Computer selected. And what is the upshot?  It is perfect for all the things I have been dreaming of making this past year.  When I was too ill to work at all.  I needed “the art before the force”?  Sorry, punning can be vile to some.

Called Amy-who was very happy-and kept reminding me it is my machine-not the “Amy Machine”.  What we call and name things/people/situations is extremely important. Haven’t decided on my new machine’s name.  (OK, I do name some equipment-my current computer is Minerva.  My music XHD is Calliope.)  What is the name of the Fate who draws out the threads of life?  Love the internet–Clotho! Kind of apt for a sewing machine.  Also called the Norns.  The Daughters of Necessity.

So, If you are stuck-artistically/personally/physically-et ceterally- don’t give up before the miracle!

Have a great time doing something today!

“Windy City”–a construction (for sale!) Lucite/masonite/brick/lock and key!

I did it!  Started work on the monster project this weekend.  Had no idea I had already done so much of the work. The thinking, conceptual part of this work has been solid for a long time.  The manual “arting” part is more developed than I remembered. Huzzah!  I am at the part I really enjoy.  Serene weeks of work ahead with little or no thought!  Except for the dead ends/surprises/shedding of long held certainties/tweaking and the odd ideas I get in the middle of the night!

MY personal belief, arrived at over years of painting, printing, etc., comes down to one question.  Why does this need to be made?  I started painting very realistic acrylic paintings-local scenes, etc.  They sold well, but took too much time.

Acrylic painting

I decided to make a change and returned to printmaking.  I started my monoprint series: “Natural History”.  Some of the examples are on this blog-more on my website:  http://www.hladikvoss.com

Most good artists are capable of many different types of work in different media.  I don’t see the point in making more of the same work that other people can make.  Ask the question-what do I do that is unique?  Maybe you experiment with media.  Maybe you have an idea for a project that is outside of your comfort zone?  ( My painting clients didn’t like my prints-my print clients might not like my new work.)  I think that the more you open up to those odd thoughts, the happier/ better you will be.

I don’t think that any work I made was a waste of time.  I needed to learn to paint-print, etc,. so I would have the tools I need to create what I need to make next.  ( same feeling about the rest of my life, too!).

More to come–

Have a great day and start writing down those crazy ideas of yours.  I have a feeling they will lead you someplace fantastic!
