Here’s the full thesis/premise. I was happily making more and more of these monoprints. It occurred to me that I could make both true and false statements in this series. Let the viewer decide.
And now for the eureka moment. The INTERNET! Pause. Soak that up.
Meant to be a tool that encompasses all knowledge. As did Pliny’s encyclopedia.
Doesn’t. Didn’t. Never will.
But it gives me universal range. I can make a print about anything that strikes my fancy. Which is what I’ve been doing.

Pliny was an historian in Ancient Rome, around the time of the Pompeii disaster. ( will discuss that later!).
His encyclopedia was created from fact, best guesses, rumor, unverified accounts and utter garbage. All taken at face value as the truth. Feel you are getting closer to my premise?
I decided that I would do the same, with a conscious twist.
More on that tomorrow. Will we find our heroine tied to the train tracks? Will she finally tell you the total concept? Yes, I promise!Swoon

More today on the origins of my monoprint series “Natural History”.
Some years ago, I came across an interesting historical factoid. I wrote it down.
Soon there after I read an article about Pliny the elder, an ancient Roman historian, who wrote the world’s first encyclopedia, “Historia Naturalis”. See where this is going?
I started to collect other bits of odd history and general facts I found intriguing. Things people probably knew nothing about.
One day it occurred to me that I was on to something. I made the first 10 of the monoprints, entered some in a national competion, was accepted to the show, and had one print purchased for their permanent museum collection. I took that as a sign from above. I’m all about omens and portents.

Tomorrow: more about Pliny and the underlying thesis of this project. There has to be a “Why?” I won’t make art without it.
Then, a link to my art website the day after. In progress. Will welcome comments. It’s been lying fallow the past few years while I have been consumed and subsumed with a plethora of illness. Digging my way out-

Today’s Monoprint: “Natural History: Dollar Bill”. Aquatint, hard ground etching, chine colle, linocut, trace transfer monotype. Dollar Bill. 1/1. Contact me-It’s for sale!

I promised I would start giving you an explanation for the subject matter of my monoprint series,”Natural History”.
I love history. I think it is important. Doomed to repeat and all that. Context for every part of life. You know, history.
I detest what I find to be a more and more common attitude among younger people, ( uh oh, dangerous territory here! ) to explain away ignorance by simply stating, “that happened before I was born”.
Okay. I can’t control that seeming pride in being uneducated, clueless, and oblivious to the world.
I can have fun with my target audience, however.
Intrigued? Next post: The History of Everything. With an introduction to the world’s first encyclopedia, “Historia Naturalis”, and Pliny the Elder. Trust me on this!

Today’s print, in keeping with my Memorial Day patriotic theme:
“Natural History: Church and State”.  NH:Church:State

Ponder the implications of that….

I loved reading historical novels as a  teenager. Gone with the Wind, War and Peace, Doctor Zhivago. Romantic train wrecks. You know the kind.
I felt insulated from this type of experience. I was privileged. My parents had long term employment. Roof over ones’ head and food on the table. Culture, books, music.

I heard stories from my father about the depression of the 1930s in America. But they were all so long ago and obviously would never happen again. Especially to me.

Scarlett O’Hara eating a radish dug out the fields after the fall of Atlanta. Vomiting and vowing that this will never happen to her or her people again. Noble- inspiring. How dramatic. Still nothing to do with me.

What really resonates with me now? The impoverished post Civil War class. Hungry and clueless. Ladies painting decorative china that no one wanted. Gallant men pretending to need it as a way of giving charity without dishonor.

I find myself feeling that way. I have suffered much of my life with medical problems that have kept me from participating in a normal life.
Now I find myself in dire to constantly challenging conditions in my health and finances. This is been going on for several years and is escalating.

From necessity, I have put out appeals for donations to help me cover basic needs. Applied for charity assistance with medical expenses.  Have been selling my own artwork from an Etsy shop. Printmistress888.etsy.com  Fun, modern, affordable prints. Original art.  Please share! ( See more of my work @ http://hladikvoss.com )

Combined with job losses in my family, my inability to work, and taking responsibility for other sick family members care, my husband, Richard, and I have come to this point.

We are both college educated. Richard has worked all his life.
This was not the social contract we thought was our birthright for acting responsibly.

Will be posting my usual art related blogs again. This was more of a catch you up with my life sharing.
Been hospitalized 12 times in the past 18 months. 2 months in a nursing home after that. Still in the process of healing. Ongoing medical care.
“Under Pressure”-missing David Bowie….

Would you like and share my blog? It’s lonely out here!
